Jesus Threnody Over Jerusalem

Scripture: Luke 13:31-35

31 At that time some Pharisees said to him, “Get away from here if you want to live! Herod Antipas wants to kill you!”
32 Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox that I will keep on casting out demons and healing people today and tomorrow; and the third day I will accomplish my purpose.
33 Yes, today, tomorrow, and the next day I must proceed on my way. For it wouldn’t do for a prophet of God to be killed except in Jerusalem!
34 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me.
35 And now, look, your house is abandoned. And you will never see me again until you say, ‘Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the !’ ”

INTRODUCTION

Most scholars believe Jesus is still East of Jordan and an area known as Perea and He is headed for Jerusalem. Herod Antipas is the governor of Galilee and has no jurisdiction in Judea. Some think the Pharisees are trying to set Jesus up by directing him toward Jerusalem and away from Galilee but I don’t think so. I don’t think they wanted Him in Jerusalem at all and were trying to get Him to retreat into Gentile territory.

Luke makes one thing clear: this passage is connected to the passage before it that we discussed this morning. Dr. Wiersbe thinks the Pharisees are a bit angry over what Jesus has just said and they are tying to intimidate him with an empty threat.

I. THE PHARISEE’S THREAT

“Get away from here if you want to live! Herod Antipas wants to kill you!”

  1. First of all, you cannot threaten God and Jesus is God. Jesus must have answered with some sense of humor…He said, “I am going to do what I came today and I will do it until I have finished.” Jesus was not afraid of the Pharisees and He wasn’t afraid of Herod.
  2. This has the devil written all over it…this is his modus operandi. This is exactly how he operates. He tries to bluff, to intimidate, to terrorize…because this is his nature. To do this, he uses misinformation and lies. I am not saying that the devil is holding an unloaded gun, he and the powers of darkness have killed a lot of innocent people including many of the prophets. Jesus is not saying, “the devil is no threat,” He is simply saying, “he has nothing or no power over me and I am not afraid of him or his servants.
  3. Jesus was not political correct. Aren’t you glad! I heard a black preacher say that John the Baptist got his head cut off for getting into politics. I disagreed with him on the spot and ask him about Jesus calling Herod a fox. Jesus was not complimenting Herod.
    1. A fox is known for being sly…this is a term we associate with people we don’t trust, people who have no integrity. It was not a compliment.
    2. A fox is cunning…they are hard to catch, trap, they are sneaky and not know for open confrontation.
    3. A fox is a coward…You don’t have to be afraid of a fox, they will n0t attack. There is a world of difference between a fox and a lion and Jesus didn’t call him a lion.

II. FOR THE RECORD: NO ONE WILL THWART GOD’S REDEMPTIVE PLAN

Yes, today, tomorrow, and the next day I must proceed on my way. For it wouldn’t do for a prophet of God to be killed except in Jerusalem!  {V.33}

Jesus knew exactly where He was going and He had no intentions of changing His plans. He would fulfill His eternal destiny, He would keep His date with the cross. He was going to Jerusalem and the Pharisees, Herod and all the demons of hell were not going to stop him.

Proverbs 16:1 reads…We can make our own plans, but the LORD gives the right answer. {NLT} I like the JEV…“We can make our own plans but the LORD has the final word.”

Proverbs 19:21…You can make many plans,but the LORD‘s purpose will prevail.

Obama and the democrats have done a lot of harm. Millions of innocent babies die daily due to the twisted thinking of the democrats and Hillary has promised to load the court with progressives so that Roe V. Wade can never be overturned.

TRUTH: You and I may feel threatened by Hillary and her godless policies but she is no threat to God. Jesus would laugh in her face, just like He did the Pharisees.

I don’t know how or when but I do know HIS KINGDOM WILL COME AND HIS WILL, WILL BE DONE HERE ON EARTH JUST AS IT IS IN HEAVEN.

III.THE LAMENT OF A LOVING SAVIOR

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me.

 And now, look, your house is abandoned. And you will never see me again until you say, ‘Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the !’ ” [34-35]

Dr. Warren Wiersbe says, “This was a sob of anguish, not an outburst of anger.” The Jews not only pierced His body, they broke His heart.

The Jews had a long and sorted history of persecuting and killing prophets. They were a stubborn and stiffnecked people, rebellion was their middle name. Verse 35 is a reference to Hosea 3 and it is a very intriguing scripture to which Jesus makes reference.

HOSES’S PROPHECY

  1. Israel will be without a county, a land.
  2. Israel will have no political leader, no king, no prince.
  3. Israel will have no temple
  4. Israel will have no sacrifice [worship will be gutted, it will become meaningless]
  5. Israel will have no Messiah

One would assume these prophecies were fulfilled in part before the cross or the destruction of Jerusalem but Jesus is telling here that it is future.

Israel has their land back and they have a Prime Minister but they do not have a Messiah. Yes, they are looking for Elijah but he is not the Messiah and beside, he already came {John the Baptist}

Do you realize how important Messanic Hope was to the ancient Jews, Israelites? {It was huge}

  • What good is a TEMPLE if God is not present in it?
  • What good is a TEMPLE without Jesus.
  • What good is a religion without Jesus.

QUOTE

Jesus by these words signifies that those who reject HIM in this life will acknowledge HIM at His return with great pangs of conscience, as the MESSIAH of God but it will be too late. Christ longs earnestly for the salvation of those who are lost: but when man is determined in his refusal to believe in HIM, He ultimately leaves him to final destruction.
